For Users of Keio Mail with Email Software: Impact and Response to ''Less secure apps & your Google Account''

Google has issued a notice (Googles page) to restrict access by insecure applications on Google Workspace for Educaton.

According to the notice, if you are using Keio Mail (@xx.keio.jp, @keio.jp email address) with email software that does not support OAuth, or if you are using email software that does support OAuth but your email settings do not support OAuth, you will no longer be able to use Keio Mail.

If you are using Keio Mail (@xx.keio.jp, @keio.jp email address) with your email software, please check the following and take the necessary measures.

Impact

Users of email software that does not support OAuth for accessing Google account data (Gmail, Google Calendar, Contacts) provided by Keio University.

Supported Methods

For current users of Keio Mail with email software

Please take the following 1 or 2 measures as necessary.

If you do not take these actions, you will not be able to use Keio Mail with your email software after May 30, 2022(Tentative).
(*) Your email account will not be terminated (your email address will not be revoked and you will not be able to receive or send email).

  1. Switch to using a web browser or Google Apps for e-mail.
  2. If necessary, take the necessary measures according to the email software you are using, as described in the section "Measures to take with each email software" you are using.

For those who plan to use Keio Mail with a new email client

We recommend using a web browser or a Google application.

After May 30, 2022(Tentative), you will not be able to start using Keio Mail with email software that does not support OAuth (examples below).

  • Microsoft Outlook (excluding Outlook in Office 365)
  • Windows Live Mail (already discontinued support by Microsoft on January 10, 2017)
  • Windows 8.1 Mail

Notes

Email software that does not support OAuth will not be able to access the system.
If you are using MacOS or iOS mail applications or calendars, you will need to delete your account information and re-register.
Check your settings, as "Access for Insecure Apps" may be automatically turned off.

Please take the following actions depending on your e-mail software.

Becky! Ver2

Please refer to the following instructions to update to the latest program.

Please check if your mail settings support OAuth (exsample: Becky! Ver2 (Japanese article)). If not, please change the settings.

Thunderbird

Refer to the following procedure to update to the latest program.

Please check if your email settings support OAuth (exsample: Thunderbird (Japanese article)) . If not, please change the settings.

Windows 10 Mail

Please check if your mail settings support OAuth (example: Windows 10 Mail App). If not, please change the setting.

macOS Mail

Please check if your mail settings support OAuth (exsample: macOS Mail App). If not, please change the setting.

If this setting does not work, your computer may have an older version of macOS, so please try upgrading your macOS.

Outlook

OAuth is supported by Outlook in Office 365 (exsample: Outlook (Japanese article))

Outlook included in MS Office installed with Microsoft EES does not support OAuth.
Please consider using Outlook available in Office 365 (described below), a web browser, or an application from Google.
